J&K Assembly Issues Breach of Privilege Notice to PDP Leader Waheed-ur-Rehman Para, Seeks Response Within 7 Days
November 27, Srinagar – The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly has issued a breach of privilege notice to Waheed-ur-Rehman Para, leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) legislative party. Para, a first-time legislator, has been given seven days to respond to allegations of breaching privilege made by National Conference (NC) MLA Nazir Ahmad Khan Gurezi.
The issue stems from a speech delivered by Para during the Assembly’s debate on the Motion of Thanks on the Lieutenant Governor’s Address on November 8, 2024. Gurezi has alleged that Para made derogatory remarks and leveled accusations against him during his address, prompting the complaint to the Speaker.
In a letter issued by Qazi Mushtaq Ahmad, the under-secretary of the J&K Legislative Assembly Secretariat, the Speaker directed that Para’s comments be sought before any further action is taken.
“The office is in receipt of a communication from Gurezi addressed to the Speaker, in which it has been stated that Para, during his speech, has leveled some allegations and used derogatory remarks against him,” the letter noted.
The under-secretary clarified that the Speaker desires Para’s response in the first instance. “Accordingly, the matter was placed before the Speaker, who directed that Para’s comments be sought before proceeding further in the matter,” the letter added.
The notice asks Para to provide his response within seven days so that the matter can be reviewed by the Speaker. The outcome of this matter will likely set the tone for parliamentary decorum and accountability in the J&K Legislative Assembly.
This development highlights the rising tensions between rival political parties in the Union Territory, as debates on governance and political issues continue to dominate the legislative discourse.
