Srinagar, Nov 27 – In a move to uphold justice and prevent communal prejudice, the Himachal Pradesh Police have registered an FIR against Sushmi Devi, a Block Development Council (BDC) member from Kangra district, for allegedly harassing two Kashmiri shawl sellers. This decisive action follows a viral video of the incident, which drew widespread condemnation.

Despite the victims’ magnanimous decision to forgive Sushmi Devi and request authorities to refrain from pressing charges, the state government chose to set a firm precedent. Legal action was initiated under Sections 196(1) and 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act. The FIR, numbered 86/24, marks a strong stance against hate-based incidents.

The Director General of Police, Himachal Pradesh, Dr. Atul Verma, personally conveyed the development to Nasir Khuehami, the National Convenor of the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association. Shalini Agnihotri, Himachal Pradesh’s Superintendent of Police, reaffirmed the state’s commitment to ensuring such incidents do not recur.

Swift Response Appreciated

Khuehami praised the prompt intervention by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and the police. He lauded their commitment to addressing communal prejudice, stating, “This step sends a clear message that hate and harassment will not be tolerated. Acts of communal prejudice must be addressed firmly to ensure a harmonious society.”

A Public Apology Isn’t Enough

While Sushmi Devi issued a formal apology and expressed regret for her actions, the authorities stressed that words alone cannot compensate for targeting vulnerable minority communities. The case underscores the importance of enforcing laws that protect marginalized groups and promote societal harmony.

The government’s decision resonates as a message of zero tolerance for harassment and a commitment to fostering inclusivity in a diverse nation.
