Mehbooba Mufti Expresses Concern Over Threats to Minorities on Constitution Day
Srinagar, Nov 26: On the occasion of Constitution Day, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti voiced her dismay over the “unprecedented threats” faced by the country’s largest minority, describing it as a contradiction of the Constitution’s promise of equal rights and dignity for all citizens.
Referring to the recent violence in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal, where four individuals lost their lives during protests against a court-ordered survey of a Mughal-era mosque, Mehbooba called it a “painful reminder” of the growing challenges to minority rights in the country.
“This trend of searching for temples under mosques continues despite a clear Supreme Court ruling that the status quo on all religious places, as they existed in 1947, should be maintained,” Mehbooba stated in a post on X.
She also expressed grave concern over the erosion of constitutional values, warning that India risks losing its unique identity unless citizens rise to defend these principles. Highlighting the importance of pluralism and the rule of law, the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister urged collective action to protect the nation’s foundational ideals.
The government, meanwhile, launched yearlong celebrations to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution.
