A Lifeline on Water: Tariq Patloo’s Journey to Creating Kashmir’s First Water Ambulance on Dal Lake
By Meer Altaf Hussain
In the serene yet isolated world of Dal Lake, Srinagar, where houseboats float and communities thrive on water, healthcare access has always been a challenge. Tariq Ahmad Patloo, a resident of Dal Lake, has become a beacon of hope for these water-bound residents by creating Kashmir’s first water ambulance, an innovative solution born out of personal hardship and community spirit.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Patloo himself was infected with the virus and struggled to access medical care due to the lake’s isolation from mainland healthcare facilities. This experience opened his eyes to the critical need for a dedicated medical transport service for Dal Lake’s 8,000 to 10,000 residents, who are often left without immediate medical assistance in emergencies.
Fueled by his determination to help his community, Patloo designed and launched the water ambulance, equipped to handle medical emergencies on the lake. This initiative, which has gained widespread appreciation, addresses the gap in healthcare accessibility for residents of Dal Lake and similar water-locked areas. Despite limited financial and administrative support, Patloo’s dedication to serving his community has turned his vision into reality.
The water ambulance is a floating symbol of resilience and ingenuity, showcasing how one person’s experience and empathy can lead to transformative solutions for an entire community. For the residents of Dal Lake, Tariq Patloo is not just a designer; he is a lifeline, a hero, and a true advocate for change, proving that compassion combined with action can bring about remarkable results.
