Breast Cancer Emerges as Leading Health Threat for Women in Kashmir: Dr. Shabnam Bashir Stresses Early Detection and Lifestyle Changes
Breast cancer has become a significant health threat to women in Kashmir, with an alarming rise in cases, particularly among those under 50. Between 2019 and 2023, over 9,000 women in Jammu and Kashmir were diagnosed with breast cancer, leading to more than 2,000 deaths.
Dr. Shabnam Bashir, a prominent surgical oncologist, highlights the critical role of early detection and lifestyle adjustments to counter this “modern epidemic.” She encourages regular self-examinations and awareness of risk factors, including genetic predisposition, obesity, and sedentary habits.
To combat this health crisis, the University of Kashmir recently hosted the ‘1st J&K International Conference on Breast Cancer,’ which promoted early detection and collaborative cancer care. The conference offered free screenings, technical lectures, and panel discussions to raise awareness and improve women’s health outcomes in the region.
Dr. Bashir’s initiatives aim to empower women with knowledge, urging them to take proactive steps for their health.
