Srinagar, November 7: The Union Government has approved an increase in the sanctioned judge strength for the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, raising it from 17 to 25 judges. This decision, made in consultation with the Chief Justice of India, aims to enhance judicial efficiency in the region.

According to a notification from Arjun Ram Meghwal, Minister of State for Law & Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, the new judge strength will include 19 permanent judges and six additional judges. The allocation follows a 66:33 ratio, with 17 judges appointed from the Bar and eight from the Service.

The revised judge strength, effective from October 25, 2024, emphasizes diversity in appointments. The government has urged the High Court to promptly submit proposals to fill the vacant posts, with specific emphasis on representing Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, Minorities, and Women in the judiciary.

This decision is anticipated to address judicial delays and improve access to justice across Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh.
